The City on the Hill

In the 1600's religion was not only a main priority of each colonist, but also a main priority of each town. The colonist living in England were not practicing their ideal religion, their ideal way. Many of the seperitist (extreme puritans) fled to the new world seeking relgious freedem, hence the main idea of the Massachusettes Bay Colony. The colony was ment to be the "perfect role model" for every other colony to follow in it's footsteps accoring to John Winthrop. Winthrop saw the colony as " a City upon a hill", otherwise known as the perfect colony. He felt that his mission from God was to make this colony, and by doing so it was ment to be the colony every settler wanted to join, a colony that God would be pround of. It was clear that from landing upon the new world an emensie amount of pressure was put on the new settlers to reach perfection.

Anne Hutchinson was a women with thoughts and perserveracnce. She was a smart women who knew how to controll the court room to the best of her advantage. Winthrop felt that everyone colonist living in his colony was to work their way into heaven. Hutchinson on the other hand felt that God's decision had already been made, and what was done was done and there was nothing to be done about it. This caused a huge contraversy, seeing as Hutchinson was secretly holding meetings where she preched her thoughts to anyone willing to listen. Hutchinson was smart and knew what todo to make Winthrop and his colony feel threatend. She used their extreme devotion to God agaisnt them saying if they werent to follow her preching that God would "smite them all" and be left with extreme disapointment.

Though the Massachusettes Bay Colony was based upon religion the colonist as a whole did act hypocrtically while fighting the on going battle against Hutchinson. For example, when the preist agreed that Hutchinson showed signs a pure mental crazyness, they bascially all called not only Hutchinson a lier, but God aswell. Anne claimed that God talked to her face to face and convinced her to come to the perfect colony and change their ways. Which yes, is pure mental crazyness, but goes against their own morales and ideas and forces them to contradict themselfs.
