Join or Die

Benjamin Franklin questions:

1. Benjamin Franklin believed that the French were going see victory, because they acted with an extreme confidence and their enemies did not. The British citizens were cowards and let what happen to other people terrify them. Before they French even had a chance to defend themselves and fight, the British began to flee and abandoned their farms and plantations. Most of the citizens left to go find places were they felt were more safe. Benjamin Franklin predicted the French victory by looking at the obvious. You clearly you can't win a war without confidence which was something that the British did not have.

2. The French and Indian acted with extreme actions towards the British. The French showed no mercy, they acted with violence when trying to murder the farmers along with their wife and children, and also obtain parts of the Britain territory. Seeing as Britain's strong point was their government, the French wanted to take attack that first so the rest would seem nothing less than a cakewalk. In order to take down the British government, the French planned to violate the most Saloom treaties between the two crowns. Also they planned to kill, take, and imprison the British traders.

Cartoon Questions:

1.The Join or Die cartoon was created originally to bring the idea of what politics were to The Pennsylvania Gazette readers.

2. The Join or Die cartoon that was created was extremely symbolic, everything put into the cartoon meant something in a certain way. The animal in the cartoon was a snake which was put their in order to represent the slender size of the colony in 1754. The eight different sections of the snake is to represent the eight different colonies at the time. Each colony was placed on the snake as though it would be placed on a map.

3. The snake that's illustrated on the cartoon is cut into eight different sections. They were put into different sections depending upon which colonies were divided by war. The eight colonies that were in war at that certain time were the colonies that were put into the cartoon.

4. The cartoon was also used as a header for many newspapers during that time period. Seeing as it was the 1700's, it was obvious that copyright were non-existent. Therefor this cartoon was copied and used in many newspapers throughout all of the colonies.

Franklin Cartoon Questions:
1. In this cartoon, Franklin is attempting to express the separation of the colonies along with his opinion on the separation. It's clear that Franklin think's the colonies are not going to be successful, and remain in one piece like the "amazing british" will.
2. Franklin's message "that the Colonies may be ruined, but that Britain would thereby be maimed" did not really turn out to be true. Britain did remain togather, however the colonies did aswell. They eventually evolved into states which still remain intack today.

French and Indain War

1. Prior to the French and Indian War, many events occur ed the caused high tension between the colonist and the British. For example, the many of the colonist became colonist because they fled from their homeland of Britain in order to seek religious freedom. Also, the colonist were treated extremely unfairly by their "leader" seeing as people living in Britain did not care so much for them. All of these acts very easily could have resulted in large amounts of tension that could have resulted in war.

2. Many problems came about from the war. Seeing as it's a war to begin with there is already a problem. Politically, the war didn't so much spilt of colonies, but more like every one outside of their colonies. The war caused large amounts of un- trust between all the societies. Economically, many places could not afford to have a war period, little alone support one and continue to fight in one. America for example was considered extremely lazy, and selfish just because they were not in the proper financial state to support, and give large amounts of money to their army.

3. I feel that if the outcome had differed, that it would most likely have a large effect. Obviously if someone else had one their own rules would have been set, along with boundaries.

Transformation into Slavery

For many years slavery was considered practically as a sin, however during the 1600's everything started to change. In 1619 a Dutch ship lost it's coarse and ended up on the Virginia coast; bringing the fist African Americans to America. Slavery, something almost unheard of in Virginia allowed the new members that were boarding the ship to be baptized, saving them from slavery of any kind. However, when money began to become an important item tobacco became a main part of the colony. Seeing as tobacco was the only form of profit they were consuming labor became a huge issues, which is where indentured servants came into play. An indentured servant signed a contract which stated they were to full fill their required time and which be rewarded with 10 acres of land along with a change of clothes, food, and shelter while they were full filling their years.
In 1640 three servants ran away, two of which were white leaving one black. The white servants punishment was to conitue their jobs, only adding a year on to their time. However the black servants punishment was to become a slave for life, which changed everything. Suddedly people's opinions began to change along with the laws. Massachusetts was the first state to change their laws allowing slavery to be legal. This began a somewhat domino effect on all of the other states whom all began the change their laws allowing slavery to be legal.

Themes of early colonial peroid

I feel that religion was the main theme of the early colonial period. If it weren't for religion the colonist would not have made the voyage to the new world in the first place, seeking their religious freedom. It was also religion that cause Anne Hutchinson to become kicked out of the Massachusetts's Bay Colony. The many religion's that were preached and followed in the early colonial period were a main fixation of every colony. Religion is a extremely reoccurring issue during the early colonial period, for many colony's the church or religion house was the center of the colony.
As well as religion, land disputes were also a major theme during the early colonial period. Between the colonist and the natives land became a huge reoccurring argument. The many land disputes that occurred were the answer as to why so many wars occurred during this time period. Land was seen as power during this period, the more land you obtained, the more power you obtained. Seeing as everyone wanted power this became a huge issue. People were cheated, exploited, humiliated, and even killed in order to acquire land.
Conflict; like religion and land disputes was also a major theme during the early colonial period. Not only was it a major theme but it was extremely reoccurring. Looking into our history books, you learn mainly about war, and not only about the extreme wars but also tiny battles and arguments that took place along the way. If it were for conflict, almost nothing would of been resolved, and we would have nothing to learn in the first place.
The twitter activity that we did in class was a really fun learning experience for me. It was very different from any other assignment that I have ever been given in my previous years of learning. It was cool being able to read every ones opions through a computer and not talking for any entire class. I also felt that it was very less pressure for myself as a student seeing as you had time to think through your answer and then respond.

Captivity Narrative Essay Response

I feel that the main theme was fear. When reading the Captivity Narrative essay, you learn that the life of the colonist was a life a fear. Everything they did or planned was geared toward the war. For example, crops were planted in certain spots and at certain times in order to avoid being ruined by the war. Family's were trained to live, and survive without having the "man of the house" around at all times. It's made clear that not only the colonist, but the Natives as well lived in fear of their land be taken away from them without warning, and also having to go to war; fighting for their lives. Fear was made a main topic on every ones brains living in the New World during this time.

The City on the Hill

In the 1600's religion was not only a main priority of each colonist, but also a main priority of each town. The colonist living in England were not practicing their ideal religion, their ideal way. Many of the seperitist (extreme puritans) fled to the new world seeking relgious freedem, hence the main idea of the Massachusettes Bay Colony. The colony was ment to be the "perfect role model" for every other colony to follow in it's footsteps accoring to John Winthrop. Winthrop saw the colony as " a City upon a hill", otherwise known as the perfect colony. He felt that his mission from God was to make this colony, and by doing so it was ment to be the colony every settler wanted to join, a colony that God would be pround of. It was clear that from landing upon the new world an emensie amount of pressure was put on the new settlers to reach perfection.

Anne Hutchinson was a women with thoughts and perserveracnce. She was a smart women who knew how to controll the court room to the best of her advantage. Winthrop felt that everyone colonist living in his colony was to work their way into heaven. Hutchinson on the other hand felt that God's decision had already been made, and what was done was done and there was nothing to be done about it. This caused a huge contraversy, seeing as Hutchinson was secretly holding meetings where she preched her thoughts to anyone willing to listen. Hutchinson was smart and knew what todo to make Winthrop and his colony feel threatend. She used their extreme devotion to God agaisnt them saying if they werent to follow her preching that God would "smite them all" and be left with extreme disapointment.

Though the Massachusettes Bay Colony was based upon religion the colonist as a whole did act hypocrtically while fighting the on going battle against Hutchinson. For example, when the preist agreed that Hutchinson showed signs a pure mental crazyness, they bascially all called not only Hutchinson a lier, but God aswell. Anne claimed that God talked to her face to face and convinced her to come to the perfect colony and change their ways. Which yes, is pure mental crazyness, but goes against their own morales and ideas and forces them to contradict themselfs.

Bacon's Rebellion

I feel that Bacon nor Governor Berkeley handled the situation the right way. Nathaniel Bacon, is a hostile man who turned his opinion into a war. Governor Berkeley, I felt acted as a cowered who didn't handle the situation when it started, like he should have which is why it turned into the state that it did. It is made clear that Bacon despises all Native Americans, and felt that all Native Americans were " wolves who preyed upon our harmless and innocent lambs". As Bacon's issues remained to be unheard and unattended to, his feelings of hate and frustration began to grow stronger as time went on. Seeing as Berkeley refused to supply the colonist with an army of their own, Bacon began to form his own.
Governor Berkeley not handeling the situation when he should of was fourced to deal with it later on when Bacon formed a full army ready to fight the Natives, leaving Berkely completly defensless. This is why I feel that neither Bacon or Berkeley's behavoir and actions were justified because they both acted very selfishly. Berkeley should have helped out his colony from the beggining instead of focusing all his attention on the wealthy colonist. Also, what Bacon did was at first somewhat heroic, however he didn't think of all the innocent Native Americans that he was also killing just to prove his point which was extremly selfish of him. The result of both their actions did nothing but disturb the peace of a entire colony.
